History of the University shows us that this very university has produced and graduated a great number of world-famous scientists such as Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton, Ernest Rutherford, Niels Bohr, J.J. The number of research departments is just great, in addition to the research departments, one can also find teaching faculties. The distinctive feature of the Cambridge University is as follows: it gives the opportunity to the students to receive not only theoretical, but also practical knowledge, which are considered to be priceless when you are trying to be employed after the graduation.

In 1233, the decree from Pope Gregory IX was established, which awarded to the university some legal protection. In 1328, many foreign scholars paid visits to the University of Cambridge and started to lecture there. Since that time, the status of university was consolidated. Originally, all the students of the university were of the male sex, and only in 1947, the women succeeded to be enrolled into the University of Cambridge. This university is considered to occupy the second place in the list of the oldest university within the English speaking countries. It is also one of the world famous and leading research centers. Sometimes, the name of the university is abbreviated to Cantab. in post-nominals.

The University was build on the background of the Oxford University, when some scholars form the Oxford Universities have come cross the number of disagreements with the local townsfolk in 1920 and moved to Cambridge. Since those times, two best universities have the constant competition in all the aspects of the education and considered to be the greatest rivals.

The University of Cambridge is a member of the Russell Group (network of research-led British Universities), Coimbra Group (association of leading European Universities), League of European Research Universities, International Alliance of the Research Universities, “Golden Triangle” (geographical concentration of the UK university research).

These 31 colleges have their own autonomic system of   governing form the university. They are free to create enrolling rules and all the other domestic matters.

Mainly University of Cambridge concentrates its attention on the scientific sciences, however, at this out-standing university one can also find humanities and some of the social sciences.
